THE TRABOCCHI COAST
The Trabocchi Coast is a stretch of the Abruzzo coast, in the middle Adriatic, extended along the Adriatic state road 16 and corresponding to most of the coast in the province of Chieti. The coast is characterized by the widespread presence of trabocchi, ancient fishing machines on stilts. The coastal strip winds between valleys and hills which, ending at the sea, give life to landscapes and natural environments of various kinds.

San Giovanni in Venere: the jewel of the Trabocchi Coast
San Giovanni in Venere: the jewel of the Costa dei Trabocchi. The complex, consisting of church and monastery, stands in an isolated position on a hill called the Promontorio di Venere, with a wonderful landscape that winds from the green of the Maiella to the Adriatic coast. The building has very ancient origins. A pagan temple dedicated to the cult of the goddess Venus must have been located on the site where the abbey stands today. Between the 8th and 10th centuries the presence of a simple monastic cell is attested, while the birth of the actual abbey takes place in 1015 and is attributed to Trasmondo II, count of Teate (Chieti), whose body is buried in the crypt of the church abbey
